Happy Mother's Day!!

Hope you are all having a wonderful day! Here's a poem I wanted to share...enjoy.....

Dear Lord, it's such a hectic day
With little time to stop and pray
For life's been anything but calm
Since You called on me to be a mom
Running errands, matching socks
Building dreams with building blocks
Cooking, cleaning, and finding shoes
And other stuff that children lose
Fitting lids on bottled bugs
Wiping tears and giving hugs
A stack of last weeks mail to read
So where's the quiet time I need?
Yet when I steal a minute, Lord
Just at the sink or ironing board
To ask the blessings of Your grace
I see then, in my small one's face
That you have blessed me
All the while
And I stop to kiss
That precious smile

Happy Mommies Day All You Wonderful Moms!!

Look What I Found For My Daughter's Graduation!

Are these Graduation "Candy Cup Caps" great or what? My daughter is graduating (I can now say this without hyperventilating...took some practice though) from sixth grade next month, and I am definitely going to make these!

I found these Candy Cup Caps on a delicious blog, Bakerella, which, btw, if you haven't been there yet...you should go (after you finish reading my post of course!). Look at the tassles... Airhead sour candy belts... I'm betting my daughter and her friends are going to love these!

Want to make these but not loving the brown color? No problem--there is a recipe for making other color variations too.

Ok. You can go visit her blog now. LOL.

Woot! We're Number One!

Guess what the number one baby name for girls was in 2008? Guess....come on. Nope, not Emily...Emily has been dethroned. The reigning new queen of baby girl names is....."Emma." Now guess what my lovely daughter's name is? Guess....come on. Yes indeed-y, "Emma."

Now while I understand that many, if not most, moms might think this is not such a good thing (after all, who wants a 'common' name..), I am grinning anyway. I remember waaaay back when I was pregnant with my Emma (yea, that would be about 10 YIKES! years ago) almost NO ONE liked the name I had chosen. People would scrunch up their face, or reply with a timid, "oh...ah, that's nice...", or blatantly inform me that "Emma" was too old-fashioned, not a good choice, too boring of a name, blah, blah, blah.

Well now who's number one, and who is not???? I ask you. OK. Now I'm going to go gloat. and make a few phone calls.

Oh. Almost forgot in all my excitement. The rest of the top ten lists for boys and girl names (but we all know only number one really matters....((smirk)):

  2. Michael
  3. Ethan
  4. Joshua

My Thelma.....

I wanted to share a picture of Thelma, my "baby obsessed" dog I mentioned in my previous giveaway post. Isn't she sweet?? And that is a "wonder pet" that my two year old graciously decided to share with Thelma.. aw, my two year old little guy is a sweetie too (sometimes).

Giveaway and Review: Dirty Bow Wow

I have always had pets. When I was little I had a siamese cat named Whiskey (do not remember how that name came about..really!), and Whiskey grew up with me and even left home with me when I did.
When I got married, we became a "doggy" family, and have had dogs in our family ever since. Right now we are up to six dogs...six furry hair shedding dogs! And we love them all. Each dog has it's own unique personality...just like our kids. Our oldest dog, Thelma, has always had a penchant for "babies"..... she always wants to have a stuffed animanl toy in her mouth or in-between her paws. My husband and I kid that Thelma is so attached to "babies" because she never had any of her own, while her sister, Louise (yes..that would be 'Thelma and Louise", hehe), has had several litters in her heyday. Thelma is the sweetest dog though, and her love of babies definitely touches my heart. All you need do is ask her, "Thelma, where is your baby?", and she will happily run off to grab one of her precious toys and bring it back to you for your admiration. She will not want you to hold or take the baby from her mouth though. Thelma is one of those over-protective mother types--she has a firm "look, admire, but no touching" policy when it comes to her babies.

I fell in love with a most wonderful book I was asked to review--and I could not wait to share it here on my blog. Dirty Bow Wow , a tribute to dogs and the objects of their affection, By Cheryl and Jeffrey Katz, will melt the heart of any animal lover. Each page has a gorgeous picture of a dog with it's very special toy, and a paragraph or two about the dog. There are such cute photos... it is a just fantastic.
Dirty Bow Wow comes with a huge cause: helping homeless dogs in shelters.http://www.crownpublishing.com/tenspeed/files/2009/05/bwow_horizbanner1.jpg
We all know how sad it is to see dogs in shelters.... my daughter and I would take home every one if we could. But thanks to the The Dirty Bow Wow Toy Drive , we can all help a sweet dog sitting in a shelter somewhere get a special "baby" or toy of their very own to love. All you need to do is stop by a participating book store and drop off a new dog toy of your choosing. We can all do this...I know we can. All bloggers out there....please consider doing this. The Dirty Bow Wow Toy Drive is going on throughout the month of May...so there is plenty of time left to participate!

Win a copy of Dirty Bow Wow! It is a beautiful hardback book, and you will fall in love with the dogs featured in it.

To enter, tell me about your dog and his or her "object of affection," and if you love dogs but do not have one, leave me a comment telling me what kind of dog you would love to adopt from a shelter!

Not Me Monday!

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.
So, I have been missing my "Monday Confessionals" ... I feel the need to come clean...confess... clear my conscious and soul of all the evil I have so NOT Done this past week, but may have thought of doing. So here I go (be warned...some of these may astound you!):

I so did not go to a new McDonald's near our house without any of my kids, and order myself a chocolate shake and french fries! How would any mother live with the guilt of doing such a thing??

I absolutely did not gain weight this week from eating junk food, say like french fries and chocolate shakes! HRUMPH. Me...gain extra pounds? The very idea!

No, it was not me that gathered up my hubby's discarded and dirty sweaty socks that he finds it necessary to leave around the house as tokens of his affection for me, and promptly dispose of ALL of them. And when he ran out of socks and asked me so innocently where some clean socks (aka...laundry) were, it was so not me that told him (sweetly of course) that I did not see any of his socks in the laundry either...how peculiar???? Where could they all be????

It was not me.... "the perfect mom"...that was late picking up my daughter from school (WHAT??), and so had to skip putting a diaper or pants on my little one, (because he is on an adamant diaper/clothing strike and refuses to wear either one in the house these days) and put him into the car seat sans diaper/pants and pray to the higher ups all the way to and from my daughter's school that no unpleasant surprises would be left in said car seat.

Now this would be just so bad to do that I did not even think of doing it...really.... this is a confession I am putting up here for my friend..yea, my friend needs to clear her conscious too!
I, oops--I mean, SHE, would never ever cajole my, I mean HER husband into vacuuming our, dang, I mean Her carpets with the "promise" of a "reward" later, and then, <>, not follow through on such an arrangement! Sheesh. Who would do that to their husband???? I ask you. WHO? (Please tell me if you would so I, er, I mean my friend, will not feel so guilty!)

And finally.... I will deny ordering take-out three times last week. Deny. Deny. Deny.

There. I feel much better. Such horrible thoughts to admit to, I know. But could you imagine if I had ACTUALLY DONE any of those things?? Shudder. I have my reputation as "perfect mom" to uphold after all.

Do you need to confess anything you did last week? It will make you feel better...honest. Head over to MckMamas and sign in the confessional now. Go on. Do it!

The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club

I recently received a copy of The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club to read and review. I chose this book (had a few to select from) because the synopsis of it reminded me of the support women can give each other, and the inner strength women have but sometimes need to find again.

Plus, it just sounded so fun....definitely a "woman's" kind of story. Not too serious, melodramatic or emotionally draining, kwim? It sounded like an enjoyable light read that I would want to curl up with to read with a cup of tea by my side.

I have to say, now that I have finished reading it, that I absolutely chose right! My expectations were met, and then some. The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club was so much fun to read... I reached for the book every free moment I could. It is the type of story that has characters that develop and grow and draw you into their lives along the way. The kind of story you wish wouldn't end because you want to stay involved....see what happens next.

The main character of the story is Jo- a mom of two "lively" little boys (see-- my first connection with the character already!) who chose to leave her career and become a stay at home mom full time. Life changes literally overnight for Jo when first her husband announces he is leaving her for another woman, and then the husband suddenly dies that same night in a car accident.

I do not want to give too much of the story away in my review-- but yes, we of course do follow Jo as she begins a new life with her sons. It could seem like a "I've read this kind of book before...." type of novel, but it written with such warmth and wit and in a style that is filled with British humor that I really enjoyed it. You do need to be ready for the colorful language that comes along, and the unique English humor that is throughout the book. It is written by British author, Gil McNeil and definitely has a unique voice to it. It also took me a bit longer than I like to truly get into the story, but once I did.I was hooked.

I would call this a light funny read overall, about motherhood, life, women, relationships and day to day struggles we all encounter in one form or another. A great choice for a summer book.

3. What their house/apt. looked like (guess I am the nosy personal type..hehe)

4. What they really thought about me!!!!

5. What they talked about in the secretive Teacher's Lounge???

6. Were they really so smart and knew everything about everything?? ( like my parents??)

Share your six! Head over to Mom Dot and join in the fun!!
