Making Halloween Costumes This Year? Yea, Probably Not.

I know we are barely done with the 'back-to-school' craziness, but I am going to hazard a guess that many moms out there are now entering Halloween planning mode...because no way can I be the only one.

I have started perusing the web in search of cute handmade Halloween costumes for my boys (( It is my obligatory mission every year to say that this Halloween I am going to make costumes for my kids, not buy them from the store.))

So right off the bat I came across this too cute and 'way too easy it is ridiculous' dinosaur costume idea.

The main item needed for this costume are green sponges! Just cut them up into triangle shaped wedges and glue or sew them on to clothing. This is a costume for little kids, and  my now 'bigger kids,' wouldn't thinks it was so cute, but I had to share!

And I loved this idea for making easy reindeer antlers.

 To make these antlers, stuff white cotton gloves with batting or other material, then sew them on a cap. Instant reindeer antlers! Now that is one smart idea.

Again, this won't work for my boys, but it is a great idea all the same.

This one is awesome:

A golfer. No real directions needed here, this costume idea is pretty self explanatory.

Mad Scientist extraordinaire!

My boys are dedicated store-bought Halloween Costume type kids however. They always have been, no matter how many cute ideas I try to bribe them with. So I doubt this year will be any different. But somehow it just makes me feel better to at least pretend try to become one of those creative moms that put together awesome costumes.

Last-Minute DIY Angel Wings Halloween Costume Idea that you can make in minutes.

Got a DIY Angel Costume in mind for Halloween this year for your little one?


Since my two little goblins are boys, and my daughter is definitely past the cute angel or princess costumes - I can't take advantage of this super cute idea for easy angel wings from realsimple.com but maybe you can.


All you really need are white coffee filters, cardboard, shoelaces, and glue!

How To Make Easy and Fast Last-Minute DIY Angel Wings

Draw the shape of two angel wings on cardboard; cut them out.


Decide on the most comfortable spot for your child to wear her wings, then punch 4 holes in the cardboard. String shoelaces through them to tie around your child's shoulders.


Fold coffee filters in half and adhere them with tape or glue to the cardboard to resemble feathers.

Easy and super-fast, right?

Add a white dress, nightgown or use a white sheet to make the Angel Dress and you are basically all set!

If you have gold or silver pipe cleaners laying around, you can shape a halo out of them. Or maybe use a hangar or wire. But even without a halo, your little one will look like a cute angel! Got Sparkles? Add them to the wings.

Mummy Muffin Pizzas

Cute Mummy Face Mini pizzas made on English muffins are fun finger food to serve kids at Halloween parties. Make plenty of these however because little ghosts and goblins are sure to gobble this fun snack up quickly.

Ingredients 

English muffins Pizza sauce
Black olives
Scallions Red or green pepper
Cheese sticks or slices

Directions

Simply spread pizza sauce (or spaghetti sauce) on the muffins. Add olives for the eyes and put a piece of red/green pepper in for the eyes. Layer some string cheese in the shapes of mummy wrapping,

Cook in a preheated oven ( 350 degrees) for about 10 minutes.

Creepy Carrot Fingers

Getting kids to eat any kind of healthy food on Halloween can be quite a trick in itself. However,  cute spooky carrot fingers might be just the treat that will work though.



Ingredients 

Vegetable dip
4 long carrots
1 medium carrot
softened cream cheese
sliced-almonds
baby carrots


Directions

Fill a serving bowl with your favorite vegetable dip. Wash and peel 4 long carrots for fingers and 1 medium carrot for a thumb. Use a paring knife to cut a flat, shallow notch in the tip of each carrot.

Then use a dab of dip or softened cream cheese to glue a sliced-almond fingernail on top of each notch. Stick the fingers in the dip to make it spooky.

Place plenty of peeled baby carrots near the spooky dip for fun dipping.

You can also just continue making lots of these creepy carrot fingers to put on a plate and serve without dip.

Either way, these should make a fun Halloween party food for kids (and grown-ups)

Princess Costumes Still Number One Costume For Kids

You might be thinking Angry Birds costumes would be the number one costume for kids this Halloween. You would be wrong. Well, at least according to the National Retail Federation. Things could be differently in your own particular neighborhood, of course. Come October 31, you may be seeing all sorts of adorable Angry Birds roaming the neighborhood, ringing doorbells and tweeting "Trick or Treat!"

But Princesses are still queen when it comes to the most popular children's costumes. Nothing beats out tradition it seems, as the report says that along with princess costumes, witches and super-hero costumes round out the top three favorites for little kids.

Surprisingly enough, Angry Birds did not even make the top ten list of Halloween Costumes. And those costumes are so cute too!

So here, according to the National Retail Federation, are the most popular costumes for kids this year:

Got Apples? Make This Cute Apple Treat For Halloween

A cute Halloween treat that features caramel apples that should make all little goblins frightfully happy!

Shrunken Heads

What You Will Need: 

8 medium apples,
8 wooden craft sticks,
butter,
1 cup coarsely chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, or peanuts),
21 ounces (about 75) caramels, unwrapped,
3 tablespoons water,
6 ounces vanilla-flavor candy coating,
2 teaspoons shortening,
candies for decoration, i.e, licorice, candy corn, gumdrops, M&M's,
writing gel decorating icing,
canned frosting

Directions:

1.Wash and dry apples. Remove stems. Insert one wood stick into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a buttered baking sheet. Place chopped nuts in a shallow dish; set aside.

2.In a heavy medium saucepan, heat and stir the caramels and water over medium-low heat just until caramels are melted.

3.Dip each apple into hot caramel mixture, spooning caramel evenly over apple. Allow excess caramel to drip off. Briefly set bottoms of apples in chopped nuts. Set apples on prepared baking sheet and let stand about 30 minutes or until firm.

4.In a heavy, small saucepan, heat and stir the vanilla-flavor candy coating and shortening over low heat just until mixture is melted. Holding apples over the saucepan, spoon the melted candy coating evenly over the tops of the caramel-coated apples. Return to baking sheet and let stand about 30 minutes or until firm.

5.Decorate the apples to resemble faces or monsters using desired candies and writing gel. Use writing gel or canned frosting to attach candies to dipped apples. Makes 8 medium apples.

Make-Ahead Tip: Prepare apples as directed. Cover and chill for up to two days.

Fall Back, Lazy Saturday, Winner To Be Announced!!

Good Morning! Did you remember to set your clocks back last night?? LOL, if you didn't....do it now!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween. We had a nice time here. Lots of candy was brought home, a very cool Haunted House was visited, lots of Trick or Treaters came by our house, and everyone went to bed tired and satisfied. That's a brief recap, but you get the gist.

Yesterday was LAZY Saturday! It rained, thundered and we even had a lightning show. In between we managed to get in our daughter's soccer game--it was like the storm took a break just for us! Other than that we sat around watching movies and enjoying our first fire in the fireplace of the season ( I love Fall!).

Cool Pumpkin Stencil Maker For Easy Fun Pumpkin Carving This Year

A fun easy way for carving pumpkins this Halloween. Even kids can help out when you use these adorable cool carving templates.

My kids and I have started eyeing the pumpkins that are arriving at our local grocery store. I have been trying to stay patient and not buy any pumpkins just yet...but I think I'll be giving in on our next shopping trip.

And we will also be dong one of my favorite activities for Halloween soon too...visiting a nearby pumpkin patch farm. A family can never have too many pumpkins come Halloween time, right? We'll be carving some of our Halloween pumpkins, and doing other pumpkin decorating techniques like using stickers, markers, yarn and what-not on other pumpkins.

Design your own stencil, or choose a stencil and then print it out and use it to create a pumpkin that is like no other. Way cool for those lacking in artistry/carving skills, like yours truly.

Budget Friendly DIY Halloween Candy Holders

I came across these adorable Halloween Candy Holders and just had to share about them! It is an easy budget-friendly Halloween craft to do with the kids, and they make the perfect candy or popcorn holder at Halloween kids parties. Plus, this craft makes use of old white t-shirts you may have laying around.

If you don't happen to have any t-shits, there are other items you can use like white sheets, white construction paper, white tissue paper (this might not hold up as well, but heck how long will the cups be getting used for really), and really just about any white material you can come up with.

All you do is cut the white t-shirt into strips, glue them onto the cups (small paper or plastic cups will work)using a glue stick. Start at the bottom of the cup, wrap a glue lined strip all around the cup, and then just keep repeating until cup is fully covered.

Cut a bow out of felt--whichever Halloween color inspires you-- and for the boy cups glue the bow on the bottom of the cup, and for the girl cups glue the bow on the top of the cup.

Add some wiggly eyes using white craft glue, and you are done!

Dinosaurs R Us This Halloween

So my wonderful imaginative 4 year old has made a very important decision. He will be a dinosaur for Halloween. Decision done. Costume search will now commence. I love Halloween. And I love 4 year olds. I especially love my little 4 year old.
He is nuts about dinosaurs right now which is cool because last year at this time he wanted to be a worm for Halloween. Dinosaurs are way better than worms, in my opinion anyway,

So my son says he wants to be a red and green T-Rex dinosaur which is currently his favorite among all dinosaurs. I must admit I prefer green and red as opposed to purple (Barney ring a bell?) for dinosaur colors, but I am thinking he will look like a Christmas dinosaur.

My son also wants his little brother to be a mermaid or a Barbie. Which just seems to be fine with my 23 month old. He smiled his drooly huge smile when his older brother informed him of this decision tonight. I won't tell you what my hubby had to say about this however. I'll just leave it to your imagination.

Wormy Halloween Jello Treat

Make a fun Halloween treat using a couple packages of Jello and some gummy worms.

Make one package of jello (use Halloween colors like green or orange)and let it set.

Toss some gummy worms on the jello and let some worms dangle over the bowl(use a clear bowl for best effect!)

Mix another flavor/color jello, and pour the mixture over the set jello and gummy worms. Put the bowl back in the refrigerator and let the jello set.

Christmas Cards

We are in the midst of deciding on the kids' Halloween costumes, and yet my thoughts are already jumping ahead to Christmas. How does time fly by so quickly? Someone please tell me. I love this time of year though, just wish it didn't all come and go so quickly.

Anyway there is no denying the holiday season is just about upon us, and so I guess that means getting my to-do-lists ready. One of the first things I like to get done are our christmas cards. Pumpkin Cheesecake Recipe

Halloween is in the air. Even though we are still in August, there is no doubt that thoughts of costumes, parties, pumpkins and more are starting to be on everyone's minds. So in the spirit of everything Halloween, here is a quick recipe for pumpkin cheesecake.

1 9-ounce Graham cracker pie crust
2 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 16-ounce can of pumpkin
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger

Bake crust for 5 minutes in a 350F degree oven then set aside.

Mix together in a large bowl cream cheese, sugar, and eggs. Beat on medium speed until smooth. Add pumpkin, cinnamon, and ginger and mix until blended. Pour pumpkin mixture over pie crust.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes at 350F degrees. Let cool and refrigerate overnight. Add a spoonful or so of whipped cream on top of each slice and sprinkle with cinnamon.

If you feel like being extra decadent, serve with some vanilla ice cream. Yum!
